Artists Beit Midrash starts in Seattle

Jewish Art Salon member Nancy Current is starting an Artists Beit Midrash class this Fall in Seattle, WA. The 8-week session runs Wednesday evenings from 7-8.30pm22 October through 17 December 2014.

Theme: The Genesis of Creativity: Using Visual Midrash to Capture the Jewish Imagination

Facilitators: Jeremy Alk & Nancy Current.

Art is a gateway into intense analysis and emotional involvement in the narrative and meaning of the Biblical text.  It can pose questions, raise issues, and help us “see” the texts’ various interpretations and inherent complexities.  This class is geared to the visual artist working in any media.  All levels of artistic experience, from beginner to advanced, are invited to join.

The class will be an interactive text study of selections from Genesis followed by a discussion of related artwork.  After text study, participants will create their own work outside of class and bring it in for discussion.  Also, presentations will be made of other artists’ works on texts we explore.  The class will be team-taught by artist, Nancy Current, and Jewish educator, Jeremy Alk.

The program is inspired by the original version of the Artists Beit Midrash at New York's Temple Emanuel. Founded by artist Tobi Kahn and Rabbi Leon Morris, it has been successfully replicated in other cities, notably by Jewish Art Salon members in New Jersey (Arlene Sokolow, Miriam Stern), Chicago (Judith Joseph), Brooklyn (Deborah Ugoretz) and New Haven (Leah Caroline).
