The artist traces the minute changes of form and color: how applying paint to canvas can embody the characteristics of the locale, and how the volumetric forms of air, water, earth, ice, and sand create compositions undergoing constant metamorphoses.

She painted the desert from direct observation, standing in the midst of the landscape. In Greenland, it was impossible to paint outdoors, except for short walks outside for quick sketches or photographs. She created the paintings by observing through the residence’s large windows, focusing on a single point—“her” iceberg—and followed its changing form as it melted and re-formed.

Within these infinite, monochromatic landscapes, Appleton has created an intimate journey in paint following the elusive transitions of light, the essence of the quiet, slowness, and feeling of being “at the edge.”

The artist lived in Israel for many years and much of her work focuses on the theme of what characterizes Israeli life - hidden meanings beyond the surface, at times ominous and at times spiritual.

Raab's paintings of children in the playgrounds may appear harmonious and tranquil with a sense of a joyous exterior veneer. But each painting hints at impending danger. Things on the surface are not always what they seem and life in Israel, and as a Jew, is often threatened. Children huddled in large concrete pipes are terrified, hiding in makeshift shelters to protect themselves from incoming rocket attacks.

The artists says: "Yet, beyond the darkness, there is a tremendous outpouring of chessed. People reach out to strangers, not only to their loved ones. People show tremendous emunah and strength. There is power in prayer and mitzvot, generating and revealing a higher, transcendental realm beyond the surface."

#PlusLight is a virtual project conceived by artist Tobi Kahn to focus on seeing light in everyday life, and sharing light and hope in the face of the daunting realities of our time. Inspired by Chanukah, the JCC Manhattan invites the global community to use this hashtag as a way of documenting the light we see in the world during the holiday season.

How to Participate
Take pictures of light wherever you see it. Streetlamps, menorahs, candles and more.
Tag photos with #PlusLight on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or email your photos to PlusLight@jccmanhattan.org

On each of the eight nights of Chanukah Tobi Kahn will select one inspiring image to feature on the JCC Manhattan Facebook page.

For every 50 photos tagged with #PlusLight MPOWERD will donate a solar powered light to people in the developing world living in energy poverty.

The role of women protagonists in Tanach and Talmudic narratives is dynamic, generative and frequently overlooked in traditional Biblical studies. In many instances women instigate and propel crucial narratives. The illustrious list unfolds from Eve, Lilith, Sarah and Hagar, Mrs. Potiphar, Asnath, Serach, Batya, the Daughters of Zelophehad, Rahab, Devorah, Jael: all of these women and dozens more are uniquely crucial to the biblical narrative as women. Many more are lurking in the Talmud and commentaries. Contemporary Jewish artists are beginning to explore many of these women’s narratives.

The discussants will explore how contemporary Jewish artists address this rich trove of subjects.

Richard McBee will discuss his own work tracing ‘female narrative engines’ as well as the art of Janet Shafner whose work explores the intimate relationship between biblical narrative and Talmudic commentary. Siona Benjamin and Eden Morris’ work on violence and revenge in Lilith, Sarah and Esther narratives will be explored.

Matthew Baigell will review how Jewish feminist artists challenged biblical patriarchy and examined contemporary morality with female biblical figures, as well as the work of David Wander, locating them in late 20th century visual culture. Jacqueline Nicholls interrogates 10 Talmudic women as well as the Talmud’s misogynist aphorisms. The curatorial view from Israel will be examined with Dvora Liss (Ein Harod Museum) and her recent exhibition of two women visually engaging the Talmud in “Tosafot” and the work of Andi Arnovitz.

Ben Schachter will explore how artists, male and female alike, engage feminism in order to examine the relationship between law and cultural norms. At times the intention is clear, to advocate for change. At other times the work presents an open ended examination of gender relations or a celebration of Jewish uniqueness. Biblical and Talmudic motifs will include the Daughters of Zelophehad, the eruv and tzniut.

Vivian Mann will direct the roundtable dialogue to examine the specific roles women play in these Jewish texts; how those roles have changed and what aspects of the feminine are still unexplored in Jewish narrative.

Amala Lane’s film Archie Rand–The Painted Shul (2007) will be screened on Thursday, December 11 at 2:30 p.m. in the Biederman Library at The Hebrew Home at Riverdale located at 5901 Palisade Avenue in Riverdale, NY.

This event takes place in conjunction with the exhibition Archie Rand: Psalm 68 and is free and open to the public. Please R.S.V.P. at 718-581-1596 or art@hebrewhome.org.

In the 1970s, Archie Rand painted over 8,000 square feet of murals in the sanctuary and study rooms of the Sephardic synagogue B'nai Yosef in Brooklyn. Located in a bustling and diverse neighborhood on Ocean Parkway, the murals’ cacophony of styles range from realistic to abstract. Their appearance gave rise to fierce debate about the appropriateness of such painting among rabbis and congregants because of the Second Commandment’s prohibition against graven images.
In this film, Rand reflects on this complex journey, fomented by the clash of ideas and beliefs, and realizes that creativity and spirituality are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they nourish one another. Archie Rand's story, told with self-deprecating humor and compassion, reveals his passion for both.

As a member of the American Alliance of Museums, The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is committed to publicly exhibiting its art collection throughout its 32-acre campus including the Derfner Judaica Museum and a sculpture garden overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades. The Derfner Judaica Museum + The Art Collection provide educational and cultural programming for residents of the Hebrew Home, their families and the general public from throughout New York City, its surrounding suburbs and visitors from elsewhere. The Home is a nonprofit, non-sectarian geriatric organization serving more than 11,000 elderly persons in greater New York through its resources and community service programs. Museum hours: Sunday – Thursday, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Art Collection and grounds open daily, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Call 718 581-1596 for holiday hours and to schedule group tours, or for further information please visit the website at http://www.hebrewhome.org/artahkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10440277418206873467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8546225905925327564.post-83944402958436690412014-11-30T12:45:00.004-05:002014-12-02T12:08:46.255-05:00Jews And The Indian National Art Project

Does the term "Indian artist" apply to anyone born in an Indian family?
What role can foreigners and members of Indian minority groups play in the Indian National Art Project as scholars, critics or artists?
The Jerusalem Biennale will be held for the second time between September 24th and November 5th, 2015 in different locations around the city center of Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Biennale is dedicated to exploring the places in which the Contemporary Art world and the Jewish world of content meet. It is a stage for professional artists, who create today and refer in their work to Jewish thought, spirit, tradition or experience.

The Jerusalem Biennale is seeking Institutions, Artists Groups and Independent Curators worldwide to submit proposals for Biennale2015 – The world's first Biennale dedicated to Contemporary Jewish Art. The proposals should be for an entire exhibition of any discipline or combination of disciplines (painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, sound and more). Proposals for performance(s) can be included in an additional chapter within the general proposal.
The Biennale encourages collaboration between different organizations and groups to submit a joint proposal. Collaborative submissions will be ranked higher.
Final review will be finished Mid December and all artists who applied for Fellowship, no matter when they applied, will be notified then.
After Mid December the curators will start selecting art for our exhibit proposal.
Each page of the folio references a letter of one of the secret names of God. Kirschbaum’s invented language of mystical symbols evokes Hebrew letters, the sacred space of the Temple and Jewish ritual objects.

The artist has said “many layers of memory are invested in this work,” including preparations for his bar mitzvah, an industrial arts class in high school, and a 1966 visit to MAG as an undergraduate which sparked his life-long interest in the art of India and South
Did Jacob’s sons walk the ancient paths of their land trailed by tribesmen and women hoping to get a glimpse? Did they have an entourage? Would they be living in Hollywood today? Did their friends and family hit them up for extra livestock? The Twelve Tribes Project seeks to answer these questions.

New York's JEP initiative features one innovative artist each year and has selected Jan Lauren Greenfield for the 2014-2015 cycle. Ms. Greenfield’s Twelve Tribe Project, which opens December 9, examines the archetypes and symbols associated with each of the twelve tribes and replaces them with a pop culture star. Greenfield’s research was derived from years of study of traditional scripture, exegetical text, and shamanic interpretation. The biographical data and film history of each actor was then matched with a corresponding tribe.

In this exclusive interview with the Jewish Art Salon, Ms. Greenfield answers a few questions about her new show.
Israel was the name G-d gave Jacob and his 12 sons and their descendants make up the different tribes .

A few years ago I was living in California and got involved with earth based Judaism. An embodying of the teachings where the earth , the directions and the ritual becomes part of the celebration of Judaism. I did intensive learnings and began to explore the symbology of the 12 tribes. I also included Dinah, Jacob’s only daughter as the 13 piece in the series.

Dinah represents the moon in the series. When you see the number 12 the association goes to the signs of the zodiac and then Dinah becomes representation of the moon or the 13th symbol.

JAS: How long were you working on this? Did you know that you wanted to do this type of series when you were in California?

JLG: I get that question often and it's a hard one to answer because in some ways it's project of been working on for about five years. I pretty soon knew that I wanted to create some visual representation of the 12 tribes but it would actually take me a couple years, before the final piece, including the pop culture tribe, clicked.

JAS: Can you speak a little bit more about making art and your process?

JLG: So the idea starts in my head and take anywhere from a week germinating in there to months or in the case of The Twelve Tribe project a few years. Once I begin working on canvas things can move quickly especially if I have all the images I want and if there is little manipulation or transferring that I am doing. There is a great quote that is something like- Art is the refuse left behind by someone in deep personal transformation. I often feel like that. Sometimes the work I have made is like the shedding of the snake’s skin.

JAS: And what's next for you?

JLG: Well the 12 Tribes show opening reception is on the December ninth at the Jewish Education Project . Early in 2015 in January I'll be launching my book at the Sundance film Festival. And I'm hoping to take the 12 tribes project to the next level and who knows maybe even in Israel.

The Exhibit is open to the public.
Handmade in Israel of Mahogany wood, this tangram design is inspired by an ancient Chinese puzzle. It adds a sense of cultural fusion to the Jewish holiday of Chanukah.

Invented in China during the Song Dynasty, the tangram is a dissection
puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put
together to form shapes. The objective of the puzzle is to form a
specific shape using all seven pieces, which may not overlap. See NY Times article here.

This art exhibition featuring the paintings of Chicago-based artist Ellen Holtzblatt will be on display through December at Josef Glimer Gallery, 207 W. Superior, Chicago, IL.

Ellen Holtzblatt's work is fueled by the yearning exploration of the connection between the physical and the spiritual—the forgetfulness of the earthly body and the memory that resides in the soul. Holtzblatt notes that she examines her own identity by attempting to access “a collective ancestral unconscious.”

In Holtzblatt's series of paintings, Morning, she explores the concepts of internally and externally imposed limitations on one's desires and passions. Her self portrait, "I Have Let You See It With Your Own Eyes" utilizes the visual and symbolic language cultivated in her past series, Yizkor, and incorporates images of a specific place. The title of the painting comes from the biblical text, in which Moses is not allowed to enter Israel. Instead, God takes him to a mountain top where Moses is permitted to view the land from a distance. Holtzblatt's landscapes represent a stark contrast with city life, and ultimately become the place where she lives in her dreams and imagination.

This documentary-in-progress portrays the Jewish community of Mumbai. With the support of a Fulbright Fellowship, Benjamin interviewed and filmed surviving members of this ancient settlement which has kept its Judaism vibrant through the centuries but is rapidly disappearing.

Benjamin, now resident in the United States, is originally from Mumbai. This film is an outgrowth of her painting which is inspired by her childhood as a Jew in predominantly Hindu and Muslim India and her life in America today. In her art she blends the ancient and the modern, combining the traditions of Indian miniature painting and Sephardic icons with contemporary art practice.

November's issue of Sh'ma includes a collection of essays on what Judaism teaches about the question of privacy vs. openness. How does the mezuzah frame not only the door of our home, but also who we are as public and private people? When do we protect confidences, and when is keeping secrets morally untenable?
The recent news about alleged voyeurism at a Washington mikveh — a place where privacy is an absolute necessity — raises questions not only about the behavior of the voyeur, but also about the obligation of communal leaders to shed a public light on wrongdoing.
Other conversations in this issue:

Dov Greenberg: As a Chabad rabbi, I do not covet privacy; rather, my family and I open ourselves with love to the outside world, and in so doing, we — along with the Jewish students who visit us — are transformed.

Sacha Litman: We need to work as a collective set of organizations to pool data, learn more about each individual Jew's interests, and get smarter about providing people with the right opportunity at the right time.

Ira Stone: How open to be, how much of our private lives to share with others in the public sphere, is a question that looms larger and larger in our culture today. Negotiating between the private and the public is something that various streams of Jewish tradition have wrestled with.

Adina Levin: Do people overshare on social media, and does this cause harm? A look at the writings of a sociologist and a Jewish ethicist illustrate very different approaches to this subject.

Highlights from this month's S-Blog include:
Alon Ferency asks, "Is it possible to lie to God?"

Yael Roberts wonders who else may be watching us when we think we are alone — especially in light of the alleged abuse of privacy at a Washington D.C. mikveh.
